Walking the land / Wandern

Since moving here in June last year, we've been taking lots of walks on the property. To help Luna understand where home is, to see how the water flows, which way the wind blows, what grows where, and how we can best support and integrate our lives and livelihood with this little slice we now call home
.
I truly believe that above all else, a farmer is a caretaker, and one of the most important things they do, is ensure that the land and soil, and everything that depends on it, will thrive for generations to come
.
Before the land we used to lease was put up for sale, our former landlord tried to find a private buyer who understood that
.
We met many times with a multimillion dollar investment company, who told us time and again that they wanted to support organic and regenerative farming. But when I asked them about property maintenance, upkeep, and the value of taking care of the land, it was clear that they did not understand what I was asking, and that they did not value the true work of a farmer
.
Over the next 33 days you will be promised many things, politicians will again start pandering to the working class, fears will be stoked, and divisions will be sown. They will play into your emotions, misconstrue facts, and try to convince you through cheap tactics that they are the right choice for you. So instead, ask yourself this, can I really trust this person to follow through on the promises they have made?

I've been playing this clip on repeat since the holidays. When, for a limited time, cheap, ultraprocessed, nutrient deficient foods, were made more affordable and accessible to all Canadians
.
I first heard this song in a sweat filled hall at the royal Canadian legion in downtown Calgary in 2009, but somehow it feels even more relevant today.
.
It's a subject close to my heart, because its through volunteering @thestopfarmersmarket and their drive to increase acces to healthy food for everyone where I met my first mentors @marvedfarm, where Robin and I first met, and where this whole farming journey started
.
Farmers markets are incredible community builders and drivers of your local economy, and nothing gives us more pleasure than popping up that tent, growing good healthy food, and doing our best to ensure no one has to subsist on cheap nutritionless carbohydrates

Flash forward to March 2025 and things don't look much different. Society is again paralyzed with fear and anxiety, there is an ever increasing need and demand for local food, trade, and business leadership, but this time we are more prepared
.
In July 2022 the property we were leasing was sold to a hostile new owner and we were forced to shutter our business. Out of fear of losing everything we packed our business assets into a sea can, shipped it off site, and started looking for a new home
.
This weekend we finally unpacked our farm in a box, and though it might just look like a pile of stuff, after a long search, a years long legal battle, and stressful drive over the rockies with an overloaded uhaul and Luna our LGD who has a tendency to vomit on car rides, we made it, and we couldn't be more ecstatic to grow for you this season
.

No filters, just beautiful winter skies here in east central Alberta

Its easy to complain about winter, but its not as bleak as the world makes it out to be. One of the things I miss the most in the winter is colour, but honestly this year it's been a pretty spectacular return to those magical Prairie skies.

We're starting to warm up here and the seasons are starting to turn. Yesterday, it was 8 degrees. I drank my coffee on a bench in the sun on main street in Stettler, a gentle breeze tossing my hair and the pages of my book around
.
Just a little reminder that there is lightness and goodness no matter the season. Nature never dissapoints. If you're craving some colour today, its Saturday, I'm sure there is a local farmers market ready to delight your senses

It's been another eight months of silence over here, but we have some exciting news to share! We finally found a forever home and we will be farming again 😎 / Wir haben unser neue Zuhause gufunden!

We didn't get a chance to connect with everyone we wanted to before we left and there is nothing worse than having to leave the community of farmers, makers and community builders we have been a part of since 2019. In fact, it's what we're missing the most, but it's not goodbye forever.
.
We feel blessed to have found 11 acres with a home on it in beautiful Stettler County, AB. We've spent the last three months, walking the land, dreaming, and making plans for the future, and we can't wait to get back to growing for our community again.
.

It’s been almost a year since we last posted on here / Wir haben für viele Monate nichts geposted

Unfortunately, we haven’t yet found a solution to the situation we find ourselves in, but I wanted to jump on here and talk about food and community and how important it is for us all to support the growers and people in our communities that work towards a stronger, more food secure future, for us all.
.
No one wins when a farmer looses their access to the land, and as we continue to face a housing affordability shortfall in our region, I know our situation is not unique. So, what can we do?
.
We have been fortunate to have been supported by the @shuswapfoodaction society, who run the @downtown_salmon_arm_farmers market, which they have grown into a year-round market with over 50 vendors.
.
But did you know that they also run various other programs in our community that directly benefit farmers and our local economy?
.
It’s not an exhaustive list, but their programs have provided over 2000 local food boxes to food insecure households over the last 3 years, provide school meals to three and deliver soup to fourteen Shuswap schools, and they also created SHU-Box Food Coupons to provide support for folks to shop and enjoy the Farmers Market.
.
All of these programs support and keep farmers and food producers in this community, and are part of the reason we are fighting so hard to stay in this community, so we can someday continue to support this amazing organization.
.
The upcoming fundraiser @coldest_night_shuswap is kicking off this month and its a major income driver for many of these programs.
.

They say food prices are going to continue to rise and there has never been a more important time to support your local food system, so it pains us to have to share this news.
.
As many of you know, we have been facing land insecurity since the property we lease was bought in July. We are not sure yet where we will end up, or if we can continue farming in this community, but one thing is abundantly clear, we can no longer farm the piece of land we have been improving and caring for for the last four years.
.
Here’s a little throwback to some of our beautiful veggies this year. It’s been an absolute pleasure sharing our harvests with you all and growing with the community of Salmon Arm. We truly appreciate all the support.
.
What we need right now is time.
.
Time to reset and regroup and reflect on where to go next. We have loved growing with you all and look forward to seeing you again soon @downtown_salmon_arm_farmers market 😘

This is the second year there has been a winter farmers market in Salmon Arm, and for that we can thank our farmers and makers, you, our community for showing up every week, and @shuswapfoodaction who manage the market and ensure as many people as possible have access to fresh, healthy, local food, in our community.

Every market this winter, just as the cold seems to settle on your skin, we have been treated to a cup of soup brought to market by the very people who make it possible for us to show up and feed our community. It’s a simple gesture, but it’s rooted in so much more than that.

It’s been a little quiet over here / Wir mussten entspannen.

Since 2017, when we decided to start a farm we have both been working two jobs, and burnout amoung young farmers is a real problem, so we are grateful to have had the opportunity to stay home this holiday season for a couple of weeks.

We got lots of cuddles in, played with some beautiful Canadian wool from @customwoolenmills and @westcoastcolour and ate the best food our community has to offer. Including this Christmas Eve fondue tradition, made all the more special by our own veggies and the pork and lard from neighbours @keenanfamilyfarms, water buffalo from @reverentacres, and beautiful Napa cabbage wedges from @green_croft_gardens

Spent a few days picking apples for a friend this week / Apfelhof besuch

When we moved back from Germany we wanted to continue working in agriculture and worked full time for 3 seasons on a commercial apple orchard caring and tending to 40 acres of apples and 10 acres of wine grapes.
.
This week we answered a call for help and joined or old picking crew for the apple harvest.
.
What many people forget is that food is the product of labour, hard, exhausting labour. I‘m not in apple shape any more, and it’s been a few years since I‘ve picked, so I am feeling the labour in my body today. Our friends are closing in on week 6 of the harvest and have been hand harvesting thousands of pounds of apples daily using only a picking bag and a three legged ladder. To say this is exhausting work is an understatement.
.
I know that the price of food is steadily increasing, but we believe that the people who ensure there is food on your table deserve a living wage, and overwhelmingly this is not the case for most agricultural workers.
.
As you enjoy your next meal I encourage you to think about all the farmers and agriculture workers out there who are out there providing food for your table and show your local farmers and ag workers some love this week. Chances are they are exhausted and could use the support.

I got the seed tomato for these Cuore di bue from a coworker whose dad has been growing these and saving the seeds in Revelstoke for decades. Clocking in at 2.5 lb and 8 inches across, this is one epic sauce tomato.

We save most of our tomato seed and are always on the lookout for new varieties. I am loving this new addition, and can’t wait to pop one out of the freezer this winter.
